Feeling Hot Hot Hot

No, I’m not on some exotic vacation, lounging by a pool, howling out party songs …but I wish I were. I am “Feeling Hot Hot Hot” due to a hot spot on my back. Hopefully your pups never experience a patch of super itch like this on their bodies. I have to say, it’s quite uncomfortable and, in recent days, I have twisted myself into shapes that would make a Yogi envious. I’ll do anything to lick that spot for one brief moment of sweet relief.

The Boy has tried everything over the past few days to get me to stop but I just can’t keep away from it, so, the next stop is (gulp) the Vet. I don’t think I will mind going this time though. If my Vet can do anything to stop this insane itching, I will gladly march into his office and jump up on his exam table. Heck, I may even give him a thank you lick when all is said and done!

A New Year – Same Old Me

So how’s that New Year’s resolution you made few weeks ago going?

Like you – I faced the New Year with several options for resolutions. Would I give up digging holes in the backyard? Maybe stop howling outside the Chinese takeout for crispy noodles? I was thinking that I could cut back on eating any food or food-like substance I find on the street during my walks (it only goes to my hips). I know the Girl would love it if I could give up shedding – but that’s impossible. And the Boy? He would be thankful if I stopped waking him up in the middle of the night – but when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. My head was spinning with so many choices.
Then it dawned on me that resolutions are usually about giving up something you like and how is doing that supposed to make the New Year a happy one? So what did I decide? I decided that I am giving up making a New Year’s resolution this year and, I have to tell you, at this point, I’m doing pretty good!

May your resolutions be as successful! Here’s to a happy and healthy 2012 for all!

Thankful

At this time of year we are all thankful for things big and small. Here is my short list:

- A soft bed (well, actually the 3 beds that are spread throughout the house)
- Food in my belly (especially cheese!)
- A nice rub on the head (and if you scratch behind my ears, I may just smile at you)
- My family (without them, I may not be here)
…And my fans (without you, I would have no reason to share my thoughts!)

Ok – I admit it. I like to beg. I have perfected my soulful stare down when The Girl is about to pop that last bit of toast into her mouth resulting in my mouthful of toast. I have finessed the motion of nudging my head between the table and a forkful of pasta and relished the savory strands as they plop to the floor (while ignoring spaghetti sauce on my head). I’ve practiced the sad yodel that I break into while staring into the Chinese Take-Out that almost always produces a baggy of crispy noodles. I’ve even finagled half a dozen cookies from the plate of an unsuspecting child who thought I was just leaning against her because I liked her. Ok – maybe that wasn’t begging – but I don’t think it was stealing either. I’m no criminal…just an expert mooch!

Another Me?

Last year, we had met a man at our town Chili Festival (beans…yummmm) who boasted that he had a dog that looked just like me. How could that be I thought? I am one-of-a-kind in these here parts- one who elicits stares, comments and constant petting. Could there possibly be another like me? I had to see it with my own eyes. But how would this happen?

As luck would have it, we ran into the same guy at this year’s Chili Festival (more beans…yummmm) where it was decided that I would meet my “other” the very next day. I will let the picture speak for itself (that’s me on the left). I think it’s safe to say that this is a brother from another mother – well, actually, a sister, named Callie.

And yes…I liked her.

I really liked her…

Now let me blush in peace!

Man of Few Words

The scene: Monday morning, about 5am. I am snug on the floor, wedged between the Girl’s side of the bed and the wall – above me, an open window with a gentle breeze blowing through. Enter, one yippy dog in the neighborhood who begins to bark and bark and bark.

I try my best to ignore the barking, as does the Girl and Sir, who both roll over, away from the window. I too think I can ignore the noise and start dozing off until the pooch that lives in the house behind us feels like he needs to chime in! Now at 5:05am, we have two dogs in a barking contest.

Who can sleep with all of this?! I pull myself up and prepare to give these two a piece of my mind. Filled with utter annoyance, I deliver a deep, loud “Arrrroooyooooooofff!” out the window. And in return? Complete silence! I must have sounded like I meant business.

With that, I look at the Girl with a satisfied smile, curl onto the floor and drift back into my peaceful…and quiet dreamland.

What’s in a Name?

It recently dawned on me that I have several names and those names are reflective on what I am doing at the particular moment. For instance – when it’s time for me to eat, I hear “Sammy Boy, check your bowl”. When I am basking in the sun on the rug and the vacuum comes out, I may hear “Move it Sam Boney”. When playing with the Boy, he sometimes calls me “big gorilla”. Now, I don’t know what a big gorilla is but I am sure it is as sweet and loveable as I am. And every so often, maybe when I am licking the plates in the dishwasher or nosing through the trash, I hear “Hey dummy –cut it out”. I’m never bothered by that name though because who was the dummy that left the lid off the trashcan anyway?

As promised, here are some pictures of my vacation to the North Folk of Long Island (NY)…and the car ride was TOTALLY worth it!

I loved basking in the sun on the dock and walking the beach. As always, it was hard to say goodbye but I will have some great memories to look back on!

V A C A T I O N

It’s vacation time again! I’ll be loaded up in the car, surrounded by many belongings to make the trip an enjoyable one. I hope the Boy remembers to pack my blankey!

The destination is unknown. Will it be the lake? The beach? Maybe a cabin in the woods? I will have no idea of where I am going until I get there which makes the journey much more exciting.

Unfortunately for me, I know there is car trip involved. Have I mentioned I am not keen on car rides? I know. I know. I should be the one with my giant white head out the window, gleefully panting and lapping up the cool wind that blows through my fur. Instead I prefer laying in the back of the truck, curled in tight ball, sleeping the journey away – that is until we stop for lunch. The one thing that makes me feel better? French fries! They may not be the best for my waistline but they do calm my nerves.

Now pass the ketchup and let’s get to where were going already!

Off to the Vet

I can feel it in the air. I think it’s time for my annual visit to the vet. I would so much rather spend my day sleeping but I recently overheard a conversation about my needing to get a new rabies shot before I could go to the groomer again. Zoowie! So I have to have a bath on top of all of this?!

I do find the waiting room at the vet somewhat interesting though. It’s like a trip to a mini petting zoo complete with birds, kittens, chinchillas, ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs – each looking about as thrilled to be there as I do (insert sarcastic snicker here). Once in a while there is a perky puppy there who wants to play. The poor little thing has no idea what’s in store for it behind those doors. I’d like to see how perky it is at their next visit.

Oh no…I hear The Girl calling me with that sweet “Come Sammy Boy” voice she uses when they are either piling me into the car for a long car trip (insert carsick burp here), taking me to the groomer (insert reluctant stance here), or bringing me to the vet (insert bewildered look here).

Better muster up the courage…it’s go time.
